Our Council History

Girls on the Run of the Greater Chesapeake, which began as Girls on the Run Annapolis, was established  in 2005 by Beth Howell. In our first season we served twenty girls on two community-draw teams based at the Bates Athletic Complex in Annapolis. Since that time we have served more than 3000 girls with the help of community volunteers.

Our council has experienced steady growth since its inception. In February 2010 we received permission to expand our operation and as a result became Girls on the Run of the Greater Chesapeake. Today our program serves a diverse group of 3rd through 8th grade girls across Anne Arundel and Calvert counties. Each season nearly 100 coaches from within these communities volunteer to lead teams and serve as confident, physically active female role models.  In Fall 2008, our council joined the national Girls on the Run 5K series. Hosting more than 1000 participants our race in one of the larger council races in the series.

Girls on the Run of the Greater Chesapeake is a non-profit organization that is supported solely by program fees, individual and corporate donations and grants. With your support we can continue this growth and fulfill our commitment to helping young women fulfill their potential by decreasing the percentage of at-risk activities and empowering a generation of self-aware girls who are tomorrow’s role models for a healthy, balanced lifestyle.
