Executive Director – Angela Edwards

Angie first became involved in Girls on the Run in 2006 and served as a running buddy, assistant coach, head coach and board member before assuming the role of Executive Director in June 2009. She is a former career firefighter/paramedic and currently is on the faculty at the University of Maryland College Park where she coordinates the advanced life support education program. She is also completing her PhD in Exercise Physiology at the University of Maryland. Angie is a personal trainer and lifelong athlete that recognizes the critical role that participating in sports played in her physical and emotional development. Angie loves sharing her passion for health and fitness with the girls and helping them recognize and celebrate their gifts.

PresidentSusan Thaxton

Susan received an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BA in Political Science from Villanova University. She was an officer in the United States Navy and a production manager at an auto assembly plant, but now has the best job possible of raising her two young daughters full-time.  Susan began her involvement with girls on the run in the spring of 2006 as an assistant coach and is now serving on the board of directors.  She is a runner who requires participating in races to keep her motivated.  She loves the Girls on the Run program and truly believes that we are capable of changing our culture one girls at a time.

Colleen became involved with Girls on the Run in the fall of 2007.  She has a Bachelors of Science from Towson University, a Masters of Business from Johns Hopkins University, and is a Certified Public Accountant.  She is the business manager for a local school and the mother of 2 daughters and a son.  She enjoys running, working out, and attending various activities that involve her children.  Girls on the Run has taught her daughters as well as other girls how to gain self confidence while learning a lifetime skill – running.

Laura owns Good Company, a boutique marketing agency specializing in cause partnerships and strategies.  She holds an MA in Communications, Culture & Technology from Georgetown University and BAs in English and Communications from Trinity University.  Laura has worked for NPR, PBS and Discovery developing strategic alliances for major entertainment brands including Radio Expeditions, Sesame Workshop, PBS KIDS, Trading Spaces, Animal Planet, Miami Ink and Discovery Kids.  Girls on the Run is a perfect fit for Laura’s interests as she has as particular affinity for nonprofit programs that focus on healthy child development.  She came to Girls on the Run as a long time runner with a strong beliesf in the powerful connection between fitness and self-esteem building for girls from all walks of life.

Board Member – Lori Ruff

Lori became involved in Girls on the Run in the Fall of 2007 while her twin girls were attending the School of the Incarnation. The program was so inspirational and Lori was glad to be able to engage her daughters. She was a head coach for three years and has recently become a board member.  She graduated from James Madison University and has worked in the IT field for 25 years and is now involved in volunteering for numerous organizations.  She thoroughly loves running and tries to participate in many local races throughout the year.
