20th Anniversary Coach Spotlight: Kimbery Dixon

A group of photos with GOTRGC memories
1) How long have you been involved with Girls on the Run of the Greater Chesapeake? I was part of the small team that brought GOTR to my school many years ago.  I think our first year was when my middle daughter, who is now 24, was in 3rd grade. I coached for 16 seasons, and I served on the Board of Directors for several years.

2) What drew you to the program to get involved? From the start, my school has been incredibly lucky to have the support and encouragement of a ton of coaches - teachers, parents and community members.   I am not at all athletic, but the whole "Girl Power!" theme really drew me in, especially as the mom of three little girls.   As I got to know more about the curriculum, I felt even more deeply that all girls could benefit from the lessons, the empowerment and the community that GOTR brings.

3) Why do you think it's so important for girls today to have access to this program? Post Covid, I saw the need in my school for kids to get that same sense of community and social skills that GOTR is so good at offering, and I decided to start it back up again.  Fall 24 was our first season back in several years, and I was so thrilled, again, to have a ton of community support - including some of the same coaches that coached with me over a decade ago!   We can't wait to get back together again for a Fall 25 season!

4) What fun memory would you like to share?  The little girl on the left is my daughter (pictured above).  She was 10 there and was running her last GOTRGC 5K with her aunt.  The picture on the right is that daughter now at age 21 running this past fall with one of my girls.  Full circle moment here!

5) What are some fun facts about you? I have fostered over 100 dogs in the past 5 years. I have been teaching Kindergarten and Pre - K at the same school for 31 years now! I paint watercolors and I also run a theater program for youth with disabilities called The Penguin Project.
