New Board Member Spotlight: Melody Thomas!

Meet Melody Thomas, Girls on the Run of the Greater Chesapeake's New Board Member.

We are thrilled to introduce Melody Thomas, new GOTRGC Board Member! We asked Melody a series of questions about her involvement and thoughts about Girls on The Run. Here's what she had to say:

How have you been involved with Girls on the Run?

I recently joined the Board of Girls on the Run of the Greater Chesapeake, and I am excited to start contributing to this incredible organization. With my extensive experience in event management and community engagement, I aim to help fundraise and organize impactful activities and events that promote physical fitness and personal growth among young girls. This new role as a Board Member, allows me to merge my professional skills with my passion for running and empowering the next generation.

What drew you to get involved with Girls on the Run now?

My recent work with the Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore, where I manage the Waterfront Wellness Program and other community events like my run club A Tribe Called Run, really inspired me to expand my impact on youth programs like Girls on the Run. I believe in the organization's mission to empower young girls through fitness and character development, and I feel that now is the perfect time to leverage my experience and passion to make a meaningful difference at a pivotal age for young girls.

Why do you think it's so important for girls today to have access to this program?

Access to programs like Girls on the Run is crucial for today's girls as they provide opportunities for physical fitness but also life skills development, and confidence-building. I understand the importance of fostering a sense of community and belonging, which can significantly impact young girls' development. Such programs help girls develop resilience, teamwork, and self-esteem, equipping them with the tools they need to navigate various life challenges.

What are some of your hobbies or interests?

I am a long-time runner with over 10 marathon finishes, among countless other races, and I love the freedom and routine that running brings to my life. Running has been a significant part of my life, providing me with both physical and mental benefits. Besides running, I enjoy attending cultural events throughout Baltimore and the region, exploring new fitness trends, and participating in local community initiatives. I am always excited to take on innovative projects and personal development activities, and the GOTRGC board is made up of incredible men and women committed to that work. Excited to see what I can bring to this dynamic group as we empower and ready the next generation!
