Meet Alicia, Girls on the Run Greater Chesapeake's New Board Member.
We are thrilled to introduce Alicia, new GOTRGC Board Member! We asked Alicia a series of questions about her involvement and thoughts about Girls on The Run. Here's what she had to say:
1. How have you been involved with Girls on the Run
I haven't been directly involved with Girls on the Run before now. Girls on the Run has been a non profit I care a lot about since I found out about it, and I've been inspired and moved by the stories I hear when I meet girls, parents, and coaches that have been involved, which happens at least monthly now.
2. What drew you to get involved with Girls on the Run now?
The reach, impact and positivity that comes from Girls on the Run is absolutely incredible. The tools provided to the girls to bring together confidence, community, and resilience are important and resonates deeply with how I believe we can positively empower young women. I was looking for a way to help Baltimore and Girls on the Run of the Greater Chesapeake stands out as the organization that can enable me to have the farthest reaching positive impact.
3. Why do you think it's so important for girls today to have access to this program?
Statistically, girls still have significantly fewer opportunities to play sports and drop out of sporting activities at twice the rate of boys once they reach their teen years. Teenage girls often cite feelings of judgement, school and home pressure, lack of confidence, and lack of safety as reasons why. The world also continues to become more fragmented and isolating, and providing positive ways for young women to engage with groups in-person and participate in programs that provide them experiences that build their confidence and give them a sense of belonging is critical.
4. What are some of your hobbies or interests?
I love being outside and doing cool things with the people I love! I also adore the Baltimore area and you can see me around cycling, running, kayaking, surfing, gardening, snowboarding or just excited to be making a new friend on a hike in Stoney Run!
