New Board Member Spotlight: Shernale Kenney

Meet Shernale Kenney, Girls on the Run of the Greater Chesapeake's New Board Member.

We are thrilled to introduce Shernale Kenney, new GOTRGC Board Member! We asked Shernale a series of questions about her involvement and thoughts about Girls on The Run. Here's what she had to say:

Q: How have you been involved with Girls on the Run?

A: To date, with GOTRGC, I have advocated in my organization to support activities like the Limitless Potential breakfast, which one of our women leaders was a panelist for, and I also volunteered at this year's Fall 5K.  I am currently preparing to register as a coach for the Spring 2025 season.

Q: What drew you to get involved with Girls on the Run of the Greater Chesapeake now?

A: Simply put, the vision! Helping girls activate their LIMITLESS POTENTIAL!  When I was first introduced to GOTR by a colleague, I was immediately drawn to the mission and vision, it aligns with many of my own core values and beliefs.  Once I started to ask more questions and speak to members of the organization, I knew this was a place I needed to serve.

Q: Why do you think it's so important for girls today to have access to this program?

A: In today's world, I think it is more important than ever that girls start at an early age being encouraged to do great things.  Far too often, they are placed in boxes and not shown a path to their own dreams.  Sometimes it just takes a simple act of encouragement.  This program shows girls the importance of their mental and physical strength and helps them build both.  I also believe strongly that representation is important, we believe what we can see, so as volunteers I think it is important for us to be visible examples of the possible.

Q: What are some of your hobbies or interests?

A: Outside of work, I coach youth sports, spend time teaching youth and adult fitness, and working in the community to help bring STEM and STEAM awareness to young people.  I also enjoy spending as much time as possible with my family.
